Despite its name (which will be explained in a bit) St. Wiggles Observatory is a fully functional, well-equipped observatory located near
Port Orchard, Washington. With functionality put ahead of form, the observatory provides a safe, comfortable viewing experience but is not, admittedly, the prettiest building one has ever seen.
Built in 2006, the observatory originally afforded a limited view of the southern skies due to large fir trees obstructing the view to all sides. In 2008, however, those trees were removed and the observatory partially rebuilt to accomodate new equipment and new viewing opportunities. The observatory was named after Mt. St. Wiggles, the newest Cascades Range volcano in the Pacific Northwest. It's a long story but you can read about it here. My photos and observations all are in memory of Al McCreaken (Glendale, Arizona) and Dr. Charles Brooks (Port Orchard, Washington). You may visit the observatory (by appointment). Inside, you will see current star charts, viewing notes, plot pages and more. But the magic starts when the roof is rolled open and the red lights come on. Plug an I-pod into the built-in sound system and get ready to observe!
