On Thursday, March 26, 2009, the space shuttle Discovery (STS-119) and the International Space Station (ISS) flew over Port Orchard, Washington, just clipping Polaris, the north star (near center, top picture). Here are pictures of their crossing. Everyone agrees this is a breathtaking event, watching these man-made creations slide quietly across the sky.

I have some acreage, an observatory, a telescope and a little bit of equipment. Nothing fancy - the observatory is little more than a modified outbuilding and I don't have the fanciest equipment and the most updated gee-whiz software applications. But I do okay with what I have, and so can you. This site is not geared toward the professional astronomer; it's geared toward people like you and me who peer into the skies from our back yards and suburban rooftops.

MOST RECENT NOTABLE CELESTIAL EVENTS:

On February 20, 2008, a totally eclipsed moon hung low in the sky, magestically framed by Saturn and Regulus. View my lunar eclipse images.

In late October, 2007, Comet 17/P (Holmes) put on a spectacular show that caught the astronomy community by surprise! View my comet images.

On August 28, 2007, most of us were able to enjoy a spectacular total lunar eclipse. After three hours of sleep, I got up shortly after midnight to watch the eclipse in its entirety. View my lunar eclipse images.
