01/15/2007 - ST. WIGGLES OBSERVATORY OPENS

The long holiday weekend has been a bust thus far for opening the observatory for its first time - it's been hazy in the evening or downright cloudy in the morning. Sunday night, though, I got up at about midnight to find a clear sky, and spent several hours out in St. Wiggles Observatory, putting the equipment through its paces. Some of the equipment is still so new that I haven't quite figured out how to use it, so it's no small wonder that I didn't get any stunning pictures. Here, however, is an image of Saturn, I got while figuring out the bulb settings on the Canon EOS 20D. Turns out this was 1/200 of a second, single shot, unstacked. Basically a throw away image, but at least I got something to show for all those sleepless hours out in 28 degree weather. (12" LX90 GPS, LPI imager)

1980: FIRST ASTROPHOTO!

1980Saturn.jpg

MY FIRST ASTROPHOTO: This is an image of Saturn that was acquired through Al McCreaken's Classic Celestron 8 telescope back in 1980. The technique was a crude eyepiece projection - a Pentax SLR was placed on a tripod at the business end of the eyepiece and a cable release was used to snap the image.

1979 - 1980: SATURN SKETCHES

Here are sketches I made of Saturn while observing with Al McReaken in 1979. We were in Glendale, Arizona and back then, seeing was great from that location. I still have this sketch.

1979: SATURN / MOON SKETCHES

Here are sketches I made in 1979 while observing planetary objects through Al McReaken's Celestron 8 from the backyard of my childhood home. Those were magical times and I spent hours at the eyepiece, patiently sketching while Al held a red flashlight so I could get it just right.
